Train to Trier

Trier is the historical gem of Germany founded by Augustus Triverorum in 16BC the city of Trier was the favourite residence of many Roman emperors and has some of the finest examples of Roman architecture this side of the Alps.  Trier lies in north central Germany, 6 miles from Luxembourg on the banks of the Moselle River, and can be reached easily by train from London via the eurostar to Cologne, journey time is around 8 hours and prices start at £114.  For travellers staying in Frankfurt or Cologne, Trier is well worth the day trip as it is only a short train journey away

ROMAN AND MEDIEVAL ARCHITECTURE
Trier has many ancient sites that are worth visiting.  Why not start at the old entrance to the city?  At Porta nigra an immense sandstone gate.  From Porta nigra head into the city centre and admire some ecclesiastical architecture side by side at Trier cathedral, the former site of Constantine the Great’s palace and next to it the Church of Our Lady, the oldest Gothic church in Germany which dates back to the 13th century.  Or visit Constantine’s Basilica an inspiring, ancient throne hall which is now in use as a protestant church.

A little out from the city on the foot of Petrisberg Hill is striking Trier Amphitheatre, which in its heyday held gruesome battles between animals, gladiators and prisoners, for the entertainment of over 20,000 spectators.   From here head to the river Moselle and walk along the Römerbrücke, a Roman bridge which is still in use.  After this rapid tour through Trier history and Roman culture why not freshen up at The Imperial Roman baths of Trier, they are the finest Roman baths north of the Alps.
