Hannover is a medieval city located on the banks of the river Leine, capital of the lower Saxony region in Northern Germany.  Getting the train to Hannover is easy and can be reached in about 10 hours from London St Pancras station via the Eurostar to Brussels or Paris, and an ICE or Thalys train from Cologne.  The most popular event in the Hannover calendar is the Schützenfest.

OPERA and THEATRE
Hannover is internationally acclaimed city for both opera and theatre, two of the best places to experience this include Hannover State Opera recently voted as one of the top 20 places in the world for Opera, and the Schauspielhaus theatre.

MUSEUMS
Hannover has many museums, including the Sprengel museum of 20th century art mainly housing collections from the greats of the expressionist and contemporary movement.  The Kestner museum houses art and artefacts from the Egyptian period, to the Roman to the Christian, and contains the most important pieces from Lower Saxony history, as well as documenting 2,500 years of monetary history.

Culinary delights
Tourists with a sweet tooth will not be disappointed in Hannover, from the gooey buttercakes enjoyed in the afternoon with coffee by the locals, to the infamous Leibniz biscuits from the house of Bahsen, which are now enjoyed by biscuit lovers worldwide.  Visiting in Spring?  Then you will not be able to avoid indulging in one of the many recipes celebrating Hannover’s favourite green vegetable, asparagus, or for something a little more adventurous try Fake turtle soup (actually made with calves head)
