The Cathedral and Diocesan museum accommodates fine collections of historical art and artefacts of religious value, housed in the eerie settings of a former Prussian jail. Rhenish state museum is the most popular museum in Trier; founded in 1877 the museum houses art pieces from Trier and the surrounding area. The Simeonstift museum is a historical museum ideally located next to the Roman black gate around a quaint fountain courtyard. Karl Marx, the famous German philosopher and revolutionary was born in Trier and the Karl Marx house provides you ever wanted to know about the great man’s life, work and family.

The Zurlauben is a former traditional fishing village, doesn’t sound too exciting? Well this quaint, pretty little area on the banks of the river Moselle is well worth the visit as a relaxing break from trekking round all the Roman delights. The historical buildings have been maintained and preserved since 1800, and you can find many a restaurant of cafe to relax in with a refreshing glass Riesling.
